VOTE NO on TSPLOST aka TIA

Though I favor regional votes vs a statewide vote on the T-SPLOST I do oppose the T-SPLOST - particularly for south coastal Georgia.

It should tell you something that the sponsors
1- changed the name from TSPLOST to TIA (Transportation Investment Act).
This is straight out of the Obama playbook and is a fallacy that it is a known net investment.  It is a transfer of spending from A (anywhere else anybody might spend their $$) to T (transportation contractors and heavy users).

2- added a biased preamble to the ELECTION BALLOT

Special interests will deceive you if you let them.

If you're not convinced yet to vote against taxing yourself more with every purchase - on top of your gasoline tax - please consider these sources from Dale Provenzano, Republican candidate for Glynn County Commission District 2 (Dale is unopposed) and current State Representative Ed Setzler.

Dale published this tonight in the Coastal Tea Party Facebook group.

As we get ready to vote in the primaries tomorrow, I am thankful for the friends and supporters that helped me run for County Commissioner! I pray that I will live up to your expectations, and will be thinking about all the other candidates that have put themselves in the "line of Fire" to represent government in some form. Hopefully, everyone has or will vote!!

I also want to state my total commitment to the defeat of T-Splost! I won't go into all of the reasons this insidious tax needs to be defeated, but it does represent the largest tax increase ever on the citizens of Georgia!! If it was only 1 penny, then how come they have 18 billion dollars worth of projects to pay for.

I want some of these projects to be completed! I want people to go back to work! I want my friends to stay in Glynn County. I want Georgia to CONTINUE to have a transportation system we can be proud of for our future growth!! But this tax is not the solution, and it is not the proper funding mechanism for our State. We can do better!

I am upset that bad information has been put out for the public. It is amazing how GDOT has a website that explicitly lists all projects, rules, revenue, expense, and allocations...and yet there seems to be different interpretations of the results.

Finally, I am angry that our State Legislature and Governor, has pitted businesses, friends, neighbors, and citizens against each other over the passage of this bill....because they were not willing to do the tough work in fixing the problems with GDOT and properly funding them! Just think, if all the time, money, and sweat had been used to unite Georgia in fixing problems instead of dividing us, we would be well ahead of the Nation in returning our State to prosperity!!! I pray that come Wednesday morning, we will put his vote behind us and work to put people back to work!!

Calendar suspended temporarily

As of Aug 31, Karen's Calendar is suspended briefly due to health issues. All my energy is focused on my day job and medical needs.

Karen's Calendar is a volunteer after hours project which requires about 5 hours a week for research, writing, and production if there are no technical issues.

About technical issues:
The problems since migrating from my Lenovo T61 with Windows XP to a Lenovo T520 with Windows 7 have never been happily resolved.

Moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 I was  forced to move from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail... and Windows Live Mail lost MANY of the 2000+ names in my address book. The names successfully moved are no longer "nested"   I had neighborhood, precinct, and county lists (all personal info, NOT from GOP lists) from all over Georgia and could include/exclude areas using simple nested groups. Windows Live Mail does not support nested groups. If I want to send an email to everyone on my list in Glynn County I now have to use about 15 different groups instead of 1 or 2.  And it compounds if I try to reach a regional or statewide group of lists.

I've learned it's really not practical to hire someone else to troubleshoot unless they can read my mind and not take my time. A personal computer is just that - very personal. Any technician needs your time and attention while they troubleshoot

July 31 Referendums and GOP questions

Absentee ballots by mail are already being cast. Early in-person voting starts next week for the July 31 primary. With early voting "Election Day" is archaic. It's not the day the votes are cast. It's the day the votes are counted.  But many have yet to decide and I'm getting requests for my recommendations on candidates and issues.  Here goes my vote on the  Special Election referendums which are REAL and have the force of law and my vote on the  non binding straw-poll questions that appear on the Republican ballots.  My comments are in purple.

SPECIAL ELECTION Referendum 1 Coastal Georgia District T-SPLOST
Provides for local transportation projects to create jobs, improve roads and safety with citizen
oversight. This preamble is the subject of a lawsuit because of the biased and unusual character of a preamble for a referendum.

Shall Glynn County’s transportation system and the transportation network in this region and the state be improved by providing for a 1 percent special district transportation sales and use tax for the purpose of transportation projects and programs for a period of ten years?
I vote NO.

SPECIAL ELECTION BRUNSWICK-GLYNN COUNTY JOINT WATER AND SEWER COMMISSION REFERENDUM
Part 1.
Shall the Act be approved which changes the membership of the Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Water and Sewer Commission?
I vote YES.

Part 2 (contingent on passage of Part 1)
Select the method of selecting the seven citizen members which you favor by choosing one option:
Option 1 - A seven member commission, two of whom are appointed one each by the respective governing authorities of the county and city, and five citizen members, three of whom are selected by the grand jury of Glynn County and two of whom are elected by the qualified electors of the
entire county.
Option 2 - A seven member commission, two of whom are appointed one each by the respective governing authorities of the county and city, and five citizen members selected by the grand jury of Glynn County.
I vote Option 1. I do not want excessive power vested in the Grand Jury.

Republican Party questions. Non binding straw poll.
  1. Should Georgia have casino gambling with funds going to education?
    I vote NO.
  2. Do you support ending the current practice of unlimited gifts from lobbyists to state legislators by imposing a $100 cap on such gifts?
I vote YES though I'd prefer abolishing the gifts entirely
  3. Should active duty military personnel who are under the age of 21 be allowed to obtain a Georgia weapons license?
I vote NO. I do not favor special classes of citizens. I am also concerned that the GOP would propose a special class that could endanger reciprocity with states that have no exceptions for citizens under 21. Senator Ligon sent an email July 30 reporting he introduced legislation to allow properly trained 18-21 year olds to obtain a Georgia weapons license. For that reason he favors this question. But they are two separate things. His bill would be open to ANY 18-21 year old Georgian who met the training requirements. This question is ONLY for active duty military and proposes creating a special class of citizens. No matter how special our active duty armed forces - especially the young ones -- it is a slippery slope to legislative special privileges.
  4. Should Citizens who wish to vote in a primary election be required to register by their political party affiliation at least thirty (30) days prior to such primary election?
I vote YES with hesitation. I could still be persuaded to vote NO or to abstain but if I were voting today I'd vote YES. I think party registration could help diminish RINO candidacies but what I prefer is a single open primary for all parties and/or independent similar to what Louisiana and California have. Don't hold me to it yet; I've just started researching this.
  5. Should the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to provide that the paramount right to life is vested in each innocent human being from his or her earliest biological beginning without regard to age, race, sex, health, function, or condition of dependency?
I am undecided. I favor very few constitutional amendments; so many are for special interests. Certainly protecting innocent life is a primary function of government and is not a special interest.  It's just a poll, not an actual binding vote so this does not risk opening a medical Pandora's box.
